RACQUETBALL THEN & NOW

THE START

Racquetball was very popular in the 70’s and 80’s, with many enjoying the competitive play and intense cardiovascular workout. Colleges across the country built courts, offered classes, and hosted leagues.

BALTIMORE RACQUETBALL SCENE

Baltimore was not immune to the racquetball boom. Towson was home to a club with 14 courts, and Woodlawn boasted a location with 16 courts. Both locations hosted national tournaments for professionals and amateurs.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The core group of players began aging and started to play less. Young athletes gravitated to year-round team-oriented sports.

COURT REPURPOSING

Owners of racquetball clubs began to repurpose courts for more standard fitness equipment. With only two courts available in most clubs, the sport is now marketed as a

cardio option instead of a lifetime sport.
